About Us |
|
The Teen Center Without Walls was created by students from a number of different county high schools to offer safe youth driven activities for peers throughout south-eastern Washtenaw County.
This effort is a part of the Washtenaw Area Teens for Tomorrow Safe Places sub committee. The two youth co-chairs of that committee felt a new organization was necessary to address the lack of safe places for youth to go in Washtenaw County. When the organization was created, its youth volunteers spearheaded an effort to survey youth in Washtenaw county to see what activities they would like to see in a teen center. The hope is to one day have a teen center with walls. We are putting on events to show the leaders in the community that there is a demand for youth programming and the youth in the community would benefit from such a facility. The county currently benefits from this programming because we can guarantee that all youth who attend our events aren’t doing drugs or participating in other negative activities. This fits in with Washtenaw County’s positive youth development vision and shows the youth they can have fun and be safe at the same time! Catheryn MalczynskiCatheryn Malczynski began working with WATT and TCW2 in February of 2006. She began as a volunteer but, quickly became involved as a project coordinator and is now the new Program Director. Catheryn has a very strong background in working with youth and has been involved in a number of different projects around the county. She graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 2005 with a degree in Women’s Studies. She is also currently involved in outreach for The Corner Health Center of Ypsilanti. She hopes to stay involved and continue to find more activities that the youth of Washtenaw County want to be involved in. Jeremy KeeneyJeremy is a Sophomore at the University of Michigan Honors College with a major in Political Science and pre-law. He joined WATT during his junior year of High School to increase youth involvement in the community. A year later he created the Teen Center Without Walls organization in hopes of one day getting a teen center for the south-eastern part of Washtenaw County. He has worked on almost every WATT and TCW2 event and plans to stay involved as long as possible. Dean ClancyDean is the newest member of the team and he is a Senior as well as the Student Body President at Gabriel Richard High School. He started volunteering for WATT and TCW2 at the 2007 Teen Arts Festival and has been with us since. At the 2008 Teen Arts Festival he won the best in show prize. He plans to attend the University of Michigan next year to pursue a degree in Architecture. |
